This slut votes

I have always been interested in language, and the recent furor over the misogynistic language chosen by a far-right commentator to critique a woman’s perpective has me thinking overtime. Today, for my inaugural post, I’m sharing my new motto, taken from a graphic by Eliska Adema that is — hopefully — going viral on Facebook and elsewhere, co-opting language from the opposition.

I love creating my own uses for commonplace words, almost as much as I love making up words (subterfugeous, for example). So today I stand proud in solidarity with Sandra Fluke, as a Slut who no longer needs birth control — not because I am trying to conceive, nor because I am throwing caution to the winds (the former is untrue, the latter often true), but because I am menopausal. Despite no longer needing birth control, I believe fiercely in every woman’s right to control her own destiny. Reproductive freedom is essential to self-determination.

‘nuf said for now. Revisit soon…

  1. love this and gonna share! how ’bout how we consider the US to be so racist but not so mysogynistic (or whatever) but ‘the guys’ gave the black man and other men of color the right to vote before their mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters! what the hell is that about!?!? and a black male president before a woman has even come truly close to winning public support (those beotch sluts) 🙂

  2. Good start on your blog. I am having such a hard time getting my head around the word slut. It is so foreign to my thinking and vocabulary. So appalling that it was aimed at a young woman who was voicing her side of a public issue. Of course I’m further down the road than you and my vocabulary is certainly limited by age and my upbringing. However, I guess that applies to everyone.

    • For my part, I’m using it ironically. I don’t think it is the worst thing that Rush Limbaugh could have called Ms. Fluke, but it was clearly inappropriate, and even worse in the context of what he continued to say about posting sex videos online (to which I respond: “Pervert!”). My feeling is: if having safe, well-planned, loving sexual relations makes me a slut in “their” eyes, I’ll wear the word proudly. They can’t take us down so easily. Co-opt the tools of the opposition to use against them.
